“There was a good breakaway group up front, and we had to be represented. That was the watchword this morning in the bus at the briefing. I went out with another rider, but with a time gap, we had to chase for around twenty-five kilometres to catch up with the riders at the front. To be at the front of a Grand Tour like the Vuelta is an emotional moment, especially as it’s the very first one I’ve taken part in. There are some great riders there, but the ones I did at the start of the season helped me. But being out in front on a mountain stage isn’t really my profile, but I did the best I could. The pure climbers clearly had an advantage over me”.
