Jean-Loup Fayolle 2nd at the Grand-Saint-Bernard

At the end of a 60 kilometre ride at the front of the race, 2nd at the summit of the Grand Saint Bernard, Jean-Loup Fayolle is this evening 3rd in the provisional overall classification of the Giro Valle d'Aosta.

There was a strange atmosphere in the peloton today, with every rider thinking of Samuele Privitera. We rode the first 40 kilometres neutralised in his memory. When the race started, I joined a breakaway. We got on well and opened up a good gap on the peloton. At the foot of the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard, the final climb of the day, I went off on my own. From then on, I didn't ask myself any questions and gave 100% right up to the finish line. I was only caught again by Jarno Widar in the last few kilometres. I have no regrets this evening and I'm pleased with the improvement in the overall classification (3rd). I'm going to try to recover well for the next two stages.

It was a good step by Jean-Loup, who had anticipated the situation. The context was special, and the sport took over again in accordance with the wishes of the family, who wanted the race to continue. Having escaped, Jean-Loup managed his effort very well. He finished 2nd in the stage and moved up to 3rd place overall. Edoardo is 4th. We were first in the team rankings on this stage. Saturday sees another big stage, and one that might still suit Jean-Loup, as the passes will be less rolling than on Friday.
