The eighth stage between Chambéry and Col de la Madeleine was the first day in the high mountains. Lotte Claes was part of the day's breakaway, while Titia Ryo, who is discovering the Tour de France at the age of 20, slipped into the top 30.

I'm happy to have made the breakaway of the day. That was my goal. I know that in this type of finish, a long climb, I'm not able to keep up with the leaders. So being in the breakaway was very important for a good result. The first part went well. The pace was intense on the second climb of the day and on the Col de la Madeleine, my legs were heavy. I really enjoyed it. There were lots of people lining the roads and it was a treat. There's one day of racing left and it will be another mountain stage. Why not try another breakaway...

We were hoping to break away on this eighth stage. Lotte succeeded, which was great. She was part of a strong group that broke away on the first climb at the very beginning of the stage. It was important to make this move, and it's great that she was there. She was doing well at the start, but it got more complicated after that. Titia put in a great performance today, especially after eight days of racing in her first Tour de France. On the descent before the Col de la Madeleine, there was a breakaway, and it's a shame she wasn't in the group at the front because she found herself a bit isolated. She's making good progress, and at 20 years old, that's important because she's learning lessons for the future.
