Edoardo Zamperini 2nd in the first stage

After a long breakaway, Edoardo Zamperini finished second in the first stage of the Giro Valle d'Aosta. He is also second in the overall classification, 12 seconds behind the race leader.

The race was very fast with only 85 km to go. The route wasn't as difficult as what awaits us over the next few days. We knew that from the twentieth kilometre onwards it was going to get tricky, and then there was the wind, which was very much with us. The ARKEA-B&B HOTELS riders managed the early part of the race well, going with the punches, and Edouardo managed to catch the good breakaway. It was a good card for us at the front. We had pointed out a rider in the breakaway: Agostinacchio. We know his value and Edoardo marked him just right. Unfortunately, when Agostinacchio attacked, Edoardo was unable to accompany him. We're very happy with second place, the best team won, no regrets. The aim today was also for Jean-Loup not to lose any time on the main pack, which he did. As for the rest, we'll have a clearer idea tomorrow at the end of an atypical 10-kilometre time trial with no less than 900 metres of ascent.

This first stage of the Giro Valle d'Aosta was very strange with only two hours of racing. The start was very fast and there was a break in which I was involved. In the last few kilometres Agostinacchio attacked. I was in his wheel but I couldn't keep up. Two of us came into the sprint behind him and I managed to get the better of my rival. So I finished second in the stage.
